The overall training of the Ph.D. Course in Biochemistry and Biophysics aims at preparing students for university roles (researchers and lecturers) and for professions with specific skills in industries and independent institutions. The study of proteins is at the core of the course, which offers a number of research topics ranging from protein-based nanotechnology, structure-function relationships and modulation of gene expression, to the generation and de-codification of signals for cell survival or death. More specifically, the latter include (i), phospho/dephosphorylation of proteins and development of inhibitors of protein kinases with anti cancer potential; (ii) role and regulation of Ca2+ signals in health and disease (e.g. cardiomyopathies and prion diseases). Other central fields of research are the biochemistry and biophysics of the photosynthetic process, and bioinformatics for predicting protein structures.
